Today is Blue Monday - supposedly the unhappiest day of the year.
The date is determined on the following factors: weather conditions, debt level (the difference between debt accumulated and our ability to pay), time since Christmas, time since failing our new year's resolutions, low motivational levels and the feeling of a need to take action.
According to a press release by a mental health charity, the formula is: where weather=W, debt=d, time since Christmas=T, time since failing our new year’s resolutions=Q, low motivational levels=M and the feeling of a need to take action=N.
However, opinion is divided. Whilst some start the day in gloomy mood, others decide to steer their ship with positivity. If you prefer the latter, here are some suggestions that may help things seem a bit brighter:
Natural light helps to stabilise serotonin and triggers endorphin, both mood-boosting hormones, so try to get outside for at least 10 minutes today.
Aerobic excercise - walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, boosts endorphins leaving you feeling happier and calmer.
Remember to smile! This releases feel-good chemicals in your brain.
Take time out to appreciate what you already have, this can make you feel more energetic and optimistic.
