A Hampshire nursing home has been recognised as one of the best in England after Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors found it to be exceptionally effective, caring and well led following an unannounced inspection in January 2017.
The Andover Nursing Home shares its overall outstanding rating with just 41 of almost 10,000 homes throughout England registered to provide 24-hour medical care by qualified nurses. The 87-bed home is the largest privately owned nursing home in the country to be awarded three or more top grades in the five inspection categories – and the only outstanding nursing home in Hampshire.
Inspectors found that Matron Louise Bulloch RN and her team at the modern, purpose-built community in Weyhill Road were highly motivated, had genuine passion for their work and demonstrated strong values. People living at the home received “consistent support from staff who knew them well” and staff possessed “a full understanding of people’s care needs and had the skills and knowledge to meet them”.
Residents enjoyed an environment where independence was encouraged and celebrated as part of a lifestyle that met their individual expectations, capacity and preferences. They felt they were treated with kindness and expressed great satisfaction.
Andover Nursing Home provides general nursing care for the elderly and people with physical disabilities and learning difficulties. It offers dedicated treatment for disease, disorder and injury and specialist facilities for people living with dementia. At the time of the inspection, the age range of residents spanned almost five decades, from 53 to 100 years.
Commenting on the outcome of the rigorous two-day process, Louise Bulloch said: “It is a great privilege to be entrusted with the care of people who need additional support to lead fulfilling lives.
“The endorsement of Andover Nursing Home as outstanding by inspectors at the highest level rewards an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement by each and every person in the team. We are over the moon.
“To use the words of one staff member quoted in the report, it is a pleasure to work here. It’s like a drug and you can’t get enough of it.”
CQC is the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England. Inspectors publish their findings under five headings designed to ensure the service offered is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led.
