Andover Pair to Take on the Grand Canyon

  • Written by Editor

Local News | Andover Pair to Take on the Grand Canyon | Andover & VillagesAndover-based friends Peter Fazal and John May are to trek the Grand Canyon in support of Macmillan Cancer Support. Peter has raised over £50,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support by completing a challenge a year for the last 6 years, and with John by his side he hopes they can break the £60,000 milestone. The pair will set off on 30th September for the 8-day trek through the Arizonian wonder of the world.

Peter Fazal - Director of The Interim Works Limited in Andover - is a passionate supporter of Macmillan Cancer Support and made the pledge to complete an overseas challenge a year following losing his parents and many friends to cancer. He was also inspired by meeting a fellow Macmillan supporter, Roy Lewis, who, at the age of 72, was on his 9th annual trek alongside him on the Great Wall of China. The gruelling Grand Canyon trek will be Peter’s 7th overseas challenge for the charity having completed treks in China, Peru, Nepal, Cuba, Cambodia and India. His friend of over 20 years John May, a retired Civil Servant, is joining him once more for his second challenge after losing his wife Barbara to cancer in February 2016. Roy Lewis will also be on the Grand Canyon Trek.

Peter Fazal said “I made the decision in 2011 to undertake a challenge a year for as long as I am able to. So far my challenges have included the Great Wall of China, Machu Pichu via the Inca Trail, and trekking across Cuba through the jungle in support of Macmillan Cancer Support. Macmillan were a great help to my family when I lost my parents and want as many people as possible to benefit from their support when they need it most. By taking on the Grand Canyon with John, we hope to bring the total raised to over £60,000.”

John May added “India was tough last year but I’m really looking forward to the challenge and it will be an incredible sense of achievement to complete the trek for Macmillan Cancer Support who help so many people affected by cancer.”

The Grand Canyon challenge will involve trekking for miles in searing desert heat, facing steep inclines, difficult dusty terrain. They will walk for up to 12 hours per day in temperatures hovering around 35 Celsius, while by contrast enduring very cold nights camping in the exposed landscape. Whilst difficult to replicate these conditions in Andover training has involved four months of regular hill walks of around 12 miles per session in the local area.

Macmillan’s research shows that there are approximately 47,600 people living with cancer in Hampshire. 7,592 people hear the devastating news that they have cancer and 3,421 people sadly die from cancer each year in the county alone. The charity believes life with cancer is still life and wants to help people every step of the way through their cancer journey.

Peter and John aim to raise £7,900 from the trek, if you would like to support Macmillan Cancer Support and help them to reach her target you can donate via their JustGiving page here https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/fazalmay-grandcanyon-2017. All donations will go to supporting the work of Macmillan Cancer Support as Peter and John pay for any travel costs incurred, so your money goes straight to where it is most needed.

And if like Peter and John, you would like to do something amazing to help Macmillan to support people affected by cancer and their families, you can call the Macmillan Fundraising Support Centre on 0300 1000 200 Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm or visit www.macmillan.org.uk to find out how you can get involved.
