Hayfever Warning as Warm Weather Continues

  • Written by Editor

Health News | Hayfever Warning as Warm Weather Continues | Andover & VillagesWith the mercury set to soar this week, health experts at Optical Express are warning allergy suffering Brits to stay on red alert.

1 in 4 people suffer from hay fever and pollen allergies in the UK (WAO, 2017), with the effects of pollen actually higher in cities due to increased pollution levels, making it more of an irritant for sunbathing city dwellers.

Stephen Hannan, Clinical Services Director at Optical Express, said:

“The welcome warm weather brings a rise in the pollen count, which unfortunately for many Brits makes the warm weather less enjoyable. There are some simple things that you can do to ease the effects of hay fever, such as avoiding touching or and rubbing your eyes, taking antihistamines, and using eye drops. Spending less time outdoors when the pollen levels are at their peak will also lessen the irritation levels.

“Opt for wraparound sunglasses to increase protection from airborne pollen when outside, and swap contact lenses for glasses when the pollen count is high. Speak to your optician on the best form of eye care for you or if your red and itchy eyes persist. There are many solutions available.”

If you have any concerns about your eyes, book an appointment to see your optometrist at your earliest opportunity.
