A cake featuring the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, made by local baker and cake decorator Karen Young, of Final Touch Cakes, has been sold for £1,000. The cake was made for sale in advance of the ‘Great Hampshire Cake Sale’ in aid of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) which will take place on Friday 24th March from 9am – 4pm at St Maurice’s Covert, The High Street, Winchester.
An experienced bee keeper, Karen Young was rescued by HIOWAA in 2009 after she had an allergic reaction to a bee sting. She commented; ‘I will always be incredibly grateful to HIOWAA. Being in a situation where your breathing is restricted is really frightening and I shall never forget the day that I was rescued. The Air Ambulance brought the medical professionals and drugs that I needed. They were fantastic.’
The first ‘Great Hampshire Cake Sale’ in aid of HIOWAA has been arranged by a group of local horse riders. On average, sixteen per cent of the incidents attended by the HIOWAA critical care team are as a result of horse riding accidents. Member of the organising committee Fiona Axel Berg commented; ‘As horse riders, it is very comforting to know that the HIOWAA critical care team is able to get to the more remote rural areas in our region, should the worst happen. The Great Hampshire Cake Sale is our way of saying thank you’.
