Local Duo through Two Rounds of Open Mic UK

  • Written by Sub Editor

Jamie Walsh (Vocals), Robby Spencer (Guitar)

We first heard of Jamie and Robby through the Andover & Villages Facebook Page when they got in touch to tell us they had gotten through the first round of a competition called Open Mic UK.

The Open Mic Uk Competition itself is a very similar set up to X-Factor. The initial audition takes place in a room with 5 contestants, in front of 6 judges. Each group or artist plays his or her song and then, once the judges have heard all they need, are stopped and the other contestants get their go. After this, all the acts are asked to leave, and are then informed if they have been successful.

Jamie & Robby played a medley of Rhianna 'Diamonds' and Shirley Bassy 'Diamonds Are Forever'. After being successful, the next audition was in front of a live crowd, as well judges, all of whom are a combination of radio presenters and music industry professionals. Each act was given tickets to sell, so friends and family, and who ever wanted to come would be able to watch.

For that part, they played another medley, going from a Justin Timberlake song into Nelly 'Ride With Me'. Have progressed through that round, they now face the area finals, which will decide whether they play in the finals held in the o2 Indigo, London. This stage will take place in Fareham.

The Duet

Jamie's voice is powerful and full, with a smack of danger that entices you to listen further. Despite being the only voice, she uses it well and hits all the notes that encapsulate the songs.

Her voice is backed by Robby's guitar playing. He is a confident performer and commands attention, with his attack of the instrument. His playing indicates a strong knowledge of his instrument and I would like to have a little chat with him about his chord work, and if Robby would like to take me up on that offer, get in touch through Andover & Villages Facebook page.

As a pair, her rich voice and his confident playing, make them one to watch. So let's get behind them and give them all the support we can to ensure they go through and win.

Anyone can go and see Jamie and Robby perform in Fareham for the next round on Saturday 30th November 2013 at Ferneham Hall, Fareham (near Southampton/Portsmouth) PO16 7DB.
